BBC: I gave up!

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Generally, I'm not a giver-upper. I was just telling my fiance today that he shouldn't give up on college, despite the road blocks he's facing right now. But there was a time in college that I chose the easy road, and to me that was a little bit of giving up. And I definitely learned a lesson!

At the end of my sophomore year it had come time to apply to the professional program at the business college at Arizona State. Its this weird thing they make you do so you can complete your last two years. So I had to decide what I wanted to major in. I already knew I wanted to major in Computer Info Systems, but then they threw in a dual-major option that added Accounting. I think I would have had to take something like five additional classes, really hard classes, in my opinion. In the end I chose to just do the one major because it was easier.

Fast forward to 2002, ready to graduate in May, the nation was still recovering from 9/11, and I couldn't find a job to save my life! Technology companies were not hiring! That dual-major was looking pretty good right about now!

Fast forward again to 2007, I've now completed my accounting degree to land the job I have today. With a few thousand dollars more in student loans and a more difficult time trying to work and go to college at the same time. What would have been easier? So the lesson is, follow your gut, just do it, even if its harder, it'll pay off in the end!
